Spanish Baroque Era Painter, 1599-1660 Spanish painter. He was one of the most important European artists of the 17th century, spending his career from 1623 in the service of Philip IV of Spain. His early canvases comprised bodegones and religious paintings, but as a court artist he was largely occupied in executing portraits, while also producing some historical, mythological and further religious works. His painting was deeply affected by the work of Rubens and by Venetian artists, especially Titian, as well as by the experience of two trips (1629-31 and 1649-51) to Italy. Under these joint influences he developed a uniquely personal style characterized by very loose, expressive brushwork. (Januar 1846 in Döhlau bei Hof (Oberfranken); 8. Oktober 1937 in Ansbach) war ein deutscher Maler. Alt war der Sohn des Döhlauer Pastors Heinrich Alt und dessen Ehefrau Justina Ziegler. Nach erstem Unterricht durch seinen Vater besuchte Alt die Lateinschule in Regensburg, wo sein Vater von 1856 bis 1870 der evangelischen Gemeinde vorstand. 1861 wechselte er an die Kunstgewerbeschule N??rnberg, wo er als Schuler von Hans Ringlein bis 1863 blieb. Im Spatsommer desselben Jahres wechselte Alt mit Empfehlung seiner Lehrer an die Kunstakademie in M??nchen. Dort wurde er zuerst Sch??ler von Hermann Ansch??tz und in den Jahren 1866 bis 1873 bei Arthur von Ramberg.
Eastman Johnson
American portrait and genre painter, 1824-1906 American painter and printmaker. Between 1840 and 1842 he was apprenticed to the Boston lithographer John H. Bufford (1810-70). His mastery of this medium is apparent in his few lithographs, of which the best known is Marguerite (c. 1865-70; Worcester, MA, Amer. Antiqua. Soc.). In 1845 he moved to Washington, DC, where he drew portraits in chalk, crayon and charcoal of prominent Americans, including Daniel Webster, John Quincy Adams and Dolly Madison (all 1846; Cambridge, MA, Fogg). In 1846 he settled in Boston and brought his early portrait style to its fullest development. His chiaroscuro charcoal drawings, of exceptional sensitivity, were remarkably sophisticated for an essentially self-trained artist. In 1848 he travelled to Europe to study painting at the D?sseldorf Akademie. During his two-year stay he was closely associated with Emanuel Leutze, and painted his first genre subjects
BOSSCHAERT, Johannes
Flemish painter (b. ca. 1610, Middelburg, d. ca. 1650, Utrecht) was a member of the Bosschaert family of still life painters. He was the second son of Ambrosius Bosschaert. Little is known about his life, including the date of his death.
